Can cats eat chocolate?
No, cats cannot eat chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to cats — in fact, cats are even more sensitive to chocolate toxicity than dogs.
Why is chocolate toxic?
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, substances that cats metabolize very slowly. Cats are smaller than most dogs, so even smaller amounts can be fatal.
Danger level by type
| Type | Danger |
|---|---|
| Cocoa powder | Extreme |
| Dark chocolate | Very high |
| Milk chocolate | High |
| White chocolate | Low (but not recommended) |
Dangerous amounts
For cats, the toxic dose is significantly lower than for dogs. Just 10-15g of dark chocolate can be enough to poison a 4kg (9lb) cat.
The good news is that cats generally aren’t attracted to sweets — they lack taste receptors for sweetness. But accidents happen, especially with products that mix chocolate with milk or butter.
Symptoms of poisoning
May appear between 2 and 12 hours:
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Restlessness and agitation
- Rapid breathing
- Muscle tremors
- Increased heart rate
- Seizures (in severe cases)
- Elevated body temperature
What to do
- Seek veterinary care immediately — don’t wait for symptoms

- Don’t induce vomiting without professional guidance
- Bring the chocolate packaging if possible
Foods that contain chocolate (watch out)
