Can dogs eat tomatoes?

Português

It depends. Ripe (red) tomatoes in small amounts are safe. However, green tomatoes and parts of the plant (leaves, stems) are toxic.

What is solanine?

Tomatoes belong to the nightshade family (along with potatoes and eggplant). The green parts of the plant contain solanine and tomatine, substances toxic to dogs. As the tomato ripens and turns red, the concentration of these substances decreases dramatically.

Dangerous parts

Never offer:

  • Green (unripe) tomatoes
  • Tomato plant leaves
  • Tomato plant stems
  • Plant flowers

If you have tomato plants in your garden, restrict your dog’s access to the plant.

Benefits of ripe tomatoes

  • Lycopene — antioxidant that may reduce heart disease risk
  • Vitamin C — immune support
  • Potassium — muscle health
  • Fiber — aids digestion
  • Vitamin K — blood clotting

How to serve ripe tomatoes

  • Choose tomatoes that are fully red and ripe
  • Wash thoroughly
  • Remove the seeds (they can cause discomfort)
  • Cut into small pieces
  • Serve without salt or seasoning

1-2 small pieces as an occasional treat. Tomatoes should not be a regular part of the diet.
